Our Tuition Assistance Program makes it possible for children to attend school in several communities in Haiti. Currently we assist students in * The greater LesCayes area * Grann Plaine on Ile-a-Vache and * Pointe Est on Ile-a-Vache!
In addition, we are constructing a school in Grann Plaine and another in Calbastique!
This video clip dates back to the early stages of our sponsorship program! We marvel at the ways God continues to use people like you to advance the educational opportunities for the children of Haiti! If you wish to sponsor a student at one of the Grann Plaine schools, you will find that specific donation form under the tab "DONATE / CONTACT US" For schools in other areas, please use the Mail-in Donation Form shown there!
GRACE School Offers Hope!
Hope found its way to a remote village in Haiti. The village of Grann Plaine is located on the small island of Île-à-Vache, just off the southwestern coast of mainland Haiti.
In this village, there is no electricity, no clean drinking water and no hospitals. Previously, school only went through fourth grade. There was no money to pay the teachers and no money to build a school building. Hope came in the form of a tuition assistance program and a promise of construction of a school.
By the grace of God, in 2007, GRACE School was born! Initially, a few villagers became unpaid teachers, where school was taught under a mango tree. Community leaders joined forces and offered their participation to help with the construction of the school. Teachers began receiving salaries. Many students who had never had the opportunity to go to school now had a chance at an education.
In the 2010-2011 school year, GRACE School began offering classes in two villages on Île-à-Vache! A sister school opened in the small fishing village of Pointe Est, located on the north east coast of Île-à-Vache. An airport began construction on the island, leaving us with the decision to relocate this school in 2015 to a community called Boisbouton. This move was necessary as the runway had caused a much longer walk to school for many of the students.
In 2012, a generous donation of solar lighting was installed at the Grann Plaine campus of GRACE School making this one of the only schools on Île-à-Vache with electricity! What a change this has made for the students & teachers and for the community who can now hold night time meetings and other activities at the school!
In 2013, construction began on a kindergarten building. The three grades of kindergarten have been meeting in a tiny house. What a joy it was when the overcrowded kindergarten classes moved into more spacious classrooms in the fall of 2013!
An added blessing is a feeding program that is available to each school child on each school day. For some children, this meal is the only meal they will have all day!
One must understand that almost no schools in Haiti are free. Even if the tuition is only $20 per month, parents who have a monthly income of $60 per month cannot afford to send even one of their children to school. This results in a vast number of children in Haiti with a lack of education, inability to read and write and a lack of employment skills.
Caribbean Children's Foundation is pleased to now be able to invite children to school who have never gone to school before. Some of these children are fourteen or fifteen years old. Even though these children will enter school at a first grade level, the children will finally have a chance to learn reading, writing, math and other skills. They will have the chance to dream the dream of becoming somebody! In the future, they will have a real chance at providing an income to feed and clothe their families.
Our Academic Reward Program was launched at the end of the 2011-2012 school year. The top student in each class was awarded a goat. When this goat has its first baby, the student is required to bring the baby to the school to continue the program. All future babies born will remain the property of the original student to help finance their future education.
In November of 2014, a long awaited dream became a reality. A TRADE School was opened on Île-à-Vache offering courses in ceramic tile laying, window installation, plumbing, stucco application cosmetology and cooking classes. In March 2016, the first graduation of TRADE School Students took place. Donors have made these classes possible! We hope that this school will be able to offer courses for many years to come!
Individuals, civic groups, churches and other organizations can make a long-lasting investment in a child's future. Please consider sponsoring a child to go to school for $240 per year. Consider donating funds or labor to aid in the continuing construction of GRACE School! If the TRADE School is of interest to you, donations to offer training courses are needed. You can make a difference in the lives of children who previously had no hope for a future!
At the end of the 2011-2012 school year, our Academic Reward Program was launched! The top student in each class was awarded a goat. The first baby goat will be brought to the school to be given to another student. All babies, thereafter, will belong to the original student to use to finance his/her continuing education
In the 2009-2010 school year, GRACE School had 320 students.
